The New Group Spelling Test (NGST) helps you assess student spelling quickly, clearly, and consistently, term by term. Delivered digitally with built-in audio support, NGST adjusts to each student’s level in real time, giving you meaningful data in under 30 minutes.

Use it alongside the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) to assess spelling and reading in a single session.

What does NGST help you do

When to use NGST

NGST includes three equivalent versions, A, B and C so that you can assess at multiple points across the year:

  • Start of year – to screen the whole cohort and identify needs
  • Mid-year – to check progress and adjust support
  • End of year – to evaluate growth and reflect on school-wide progress

What the test includes

  • Single word spelling – Measures understanding of key spelling rules
  • Spelling in context – Sentence-based tasks to check how students apply spelling skills in real situations

All tasks are audio-delivered, making the test accessible and easy to follow.
