August Challenge: Most Books Read or Most Words Read - Every School Has a Way to Win

Are your students ready to put their reading skills to the ultimate test?

This August, Renaissance is thrilled to bring back the Accelerated Reader (AR) Reading Competition – and this year, we’re recognising reading achievement two ways.

We’re challenging schools across Australia and New Zealand to find out:

Which class can read the MOST books, and which class can read the MOST words, in AR during August 2026?

Whether you’re building strong reading habits or encouraging some friendly classroom rivalry, this is the perfect opportunity to motivate students to read more and celebrate their achievements in a big way – whatever their year level or reading stage.

Two ways to win

We know that a class of confident older readers working through longer novels will always rack up more words than a class of younger readers building their stamina one picture book at a time. So this year, we’re running two categories side by side:

  • Most Books Read (highest number of quizzes passed) – recognising volume and consistency, giving every year level a genuine shot at the top spot.
  • Most Words Read (highest total word count) – recognising reading stamina and challenge.

And the rewards?

  • The top class for Most Words Read will win Renaissance Credits towards a brand-new Renaissance product for their school (not applicable to your existing subscription) plus a pizza party (valued up to $300)!
  • The top class for Most Books Read will win Renaissance Credits (a smaller amount) plus a pizza party (valued up to $300)!
  • The runner-up in each category will each win a pizza party (valued up to $300) – four classes, two categories, everyone worth celebrating!

Start planning your reading strategy – the competition runs from 1 August to 1 September 2026, with winners announced on Friday, 4 September 2026.
