Why WellComm Works

1) Early identification

WellComm helps teachers and educators spot children who may have speech and language development needs early, so they get support when it matters most. Because communication challenges are often masked – even in the first years of primary – universal assessment surfaces who needs targeted help now. Early identification and intervention boosts confidence, participation and readiness for literacy.

2) Simple and quick to use

A 10–15-minute universal assessment with traffic-light results shows each child’s profile instantly. Available in digital or paper, with built-in reporting and progress tracking. Anyone in your team can administer it – educators, classroom teachers, education support staff no speech pathology expertise required. Activities can be shared with families to continue support at home.

3) Clear, traffic-light reporting

  • Green: on track
  • Amber: needs targeted support
  • Red: complex needs consider speech pathologist referral

Reports are easy to interpret and to share with leadership, learning support, and families, helping prioritise referrals and monitor progress.

4) Ready-to-use interventions

WellComm saves time with structured, play-based learning experiences’ you can deliver 1:1, in small groups or across a class. Use the Group Planning overview to match support to need, and the Big Book of Ideas for activities you can start today perfect while awaiting external services.

FAQs

What subtests/skills are assessed?

  • Early Years: Speech, language and communication milestones; grammar; memory; inference.
  • Primary: Understanding, vocabulary, grammar, narrative and social communication.

Who can use WellComm?

A wide range of practitioners in ELCs and Primary: educators, classroom teachers, Learning Support/Inclusive Ed staff, school leaders and speech pathologists. Because it’s a complete package of assessment and support, anyone can use it effectively (no specialist expertise required). Families can also use activities at home.

What’s included in the WellComm toolkit?

Everything you need to assess, generate results, and take action is included in the digital toolkit.

You’ll also receive printed copies of the Big Book of Ideas and Picture Book if you’d like hands-on options to support delivery.

Is WellComm suitable for students with EAL/D?

Yes. WellComm is highly visual and can, where appropriate, be administered in the child’s home language. This helps clarify whether challenges are due to language difference (EAL/D) or developmental needs.

How do we decide on referral to a speech pathologist?

Red indicators flag children who should be prioritised for referral. Amber indicators can receive school/centre-based interventions first to see if they improve without external services. WellComm reports support the referral process and communication with families.
